A Life in Rhythm with the Sea

A Life in Rhythm with the Sea

An Hour In Nature

For Nikki van Dijk, the ocean is home, teacher, and constant. It grounds her, challenges her, and keeps her in conversation with something far greater than herself. Nikki reflects on a life shaped by saltwater — and the clarity that comes from surrendering to nature’s power.

How does spending time in nature influence your mental health? Can you think of a specific experience where this effect was particularly strong?

For me, spending my days in nature is essential. It's shaped who I am as a Human and I couldn’t be more grateful for that. Spending time in nature grounds me and connects me to a higher, more pure version of myself. I feel so lucky I get to Surf and spend my time in the Ocean every day challenging me emotionally, spiritually and physically.

What role do natural environments play in shaping human identity and sense of self?

It's quite infinite how much nature teaches us. It's forever changing, growing and evolving much like us. For me, nature—the ocean in particular—has taught me to respect, nurture and appreciate. It's been my biggest teacher and has taught me life lessons that are far greater than what I can comprehend. The Ocean has made me who I am and makes me a better person.

What are your fondest memories of spending time in nature?

Definitely travelling the World Exploring new waves to surf with friends and family. I've dedicated my life to being in the Ocean and I would never have it any other way!

What is your favorite natural scent, and why?

Lavender sticks out to me. The calm and gentle smell, feeling and colour.

Is there an animal or plant that you’ve always felt particularly drawn to, and can you explain why?

Definitely dogs! And Dolphins!

Can you describe an experience when you’ve been made to feel fully—and perhaps uncomfortably—aware of the power of nature?

Every day surfing reminds me of the power of the ocean and nature.
It's the funnest thing in the world to play and surf in the waves but it can also be really dangerous. Knowing you are at the mercy of the ocean. Nature wins every time haha.
